Dirt cheap :)

Yes - but only in USA. Here is my bill, from July 17, 2007:

Case: ATX ASUS 6AR6F 360W Black-Silver Silent Pro = 3220 RUR
Motherboard: Intel BLKDG965SSCK S-775 = 2690 RUR
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 OEM = 5370 RUR - and that's barely
sufficient for realtime encoding of PAL videos to H.264.
Cooler: Scythe SCNJ-1100P Ninja Plus Rev = 1420 RUR
RAM: DIMM PC-5300 DDR II 2x1 GB Kingston = 2580 RUR
Hard disk: 250.0 GB Seagate Barracuda (ST3250820AS) = 1950 RUR
DVD+RW: Lite-ON SH-16A7S SATA OEM = 990 RUR
Keyboard: Mitsumi Keyboard Classic KSX-3, PS/2 = 250 RUR
Mouse: Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical Combo M-B58 NEW = 260 RUR

Subtotal = 18730 RUR

Bought separately in a different shop:

DVI adapter: HP SH DVI ADD2 daugher board = 1070 RUR
TV tuner: Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro PCI (310i) = 2100 RUR

Subtotal = 3170 RUR
Total = 21900 RUR = 876 USD (assuming 1 USD = 25 RUR).

Reused from the old PC:

Monitor: Samsung 770P, 17" = 10174 RUR now
Printer: Epson Stylus C84 = not sold anymore, let's assume 1500 RUR
looking at similar models
Scanner: Mustek Plug-n-Scan 1200 UB Plus = 1200 RUR now

That's additionally 12874 RUR = 514 USD.

So the statement "Not having CPU power to waste is a personal decision
nowadays" is simply not true here.
