It's not what I want, but am looking at is from a user's perspective.

True.  OTOH, I have three pdf viewers, kpdf, xpdf, and acroread.  Each 
has some capabilities the others don't.  I also have four browsers: 
firefox, konqueror, seamonkey, and lynx.  :)

I wouldn't feel comfortable making changes to gnome without discussing 
on the list and getting agreement.
