We really don't want to mix systemd (and thus gnome) in the trunk pages.
  When you get to a place where you are comfortable, I'll look at a
method to combine the identical pages into the gnome book.

For now, it would be sufficient to change the gnome index pages to point
to the trunk xml for those packages that don't change. For example, in
the gnome version of postlfs/filesystems/filesystems.xml, change
href="xfsprogs.xml" to
href="../../../../trunk/BOOK/postlfs/filesystems/xfsprogs.xml"

Or possibly just change gnome/postlfs.xml so that
href="filesystems/filesystems.xml" is
href="../../../trunk/BOOK/postlfs/filesystems/filesystems.xml"

to get a whole chapter.

After reading this reply, I'm assuming that my proposal has been rejected?

Not yet, at least not completely. I don't think it's optimal and exploring other options is useful.
