Thanks, that sounds likely - but my problem was on unpatched gcc-5.1.0. I only looked at it because debian have a CVE fix for mp4 files with 0.10, and I was not convinced that anything was actually using it. On the stripped system, it looked as if it was probably in the 0.10 gstreamer stack, or else glib (based on what ldd showed). I'm starting to think that in future I will normally build with -g and without stripping (and eventually whatever changes are needed for cmake packages).
