Meanwhile, there is now a commit to upstream git to fix this.  At
the moment I'm re-rebuilding gcc to get the tests to run.  This
system already has patched gcc and is using ithe gitversion, but I
can try the patch on 2.99.917.  If it does the job, I'll go back to
the main build with unpatched gcc.
