I have preferred GVim, but...
I'd suggest leafpad as a simple gtk2 editor.

No syntax highlight, just a very bascic text editor.
Yes, I like and have used it.
But I think we have too many editors, already.
For advanced neeeds, I'd suggest geany, which features native syntax
highlighting and tons of other features for serious progamming work.

Yes, like it very much and have it always running, although not for
(B)LFS matters.
We have discussed about new editors, including Geany (in good memory of
the great Andy Benton):

Again, too many already in BLFS.
I only added JuffEd, because there was a need for a Qt based one in
LXQt, but only after much reluctance, because I always remember Andy's
comment.
Have been using it for editing my scripts, and seems good, Lots of
similarities with Geany.
Will try to edit the xml files with it, instead of GVim, in some minutes.
Important thing, also needed for almost all others: disable backup, or
remember to remove them - with (G)Vim, I just redirected them to /tmp.
Failure that and you have the local repository with lots of back up files.
