Bruce, I don't have 'set backup' anywhere, and (g)vim does create the
.swp files.
I wasn't referring to .swp files. I was referring to the filename~
files. The .swp files are automatically deleted when vim is closed.
The ~ files hang around. Many distros have 'set backup' in their
/etc/vimrc file.
