I have preferred GVim, but...
I'd suggest leafpad as a simple gtk2 editor.

No syntax highlight, just a very bascic text editor.
Yes, I like and have used it.
But I think we have too many editors, already.
For advanced needs, I'd suggest geany, which features native syntax
highlighting and tons of other features for serious progamming work.

Yes, like it very much and have it always running, although not for
(B)LFS matters.
We have discussed about new editors, including Geany (in good memory of
the great Andy Benton):

Again, too many already in BLFS.
There is nothing wrong with listing them in Chapter 6, Other Editors.
OK, will do it.
Important thing, also needed for almost all others: disable backup, or
remember to remove them - with (G)Vim, I just redirected them to /tmp.
Failure that and you have the local repository with lots of back up
files.
I just don't use 'set backup' in /etc/vimrc or ~/.vimrc.
Good idea.

Bruce, I am a little tired today, perhaps will only do these tasks and
tickets tomorrow.
Meanwhile, when was looking at them noticed that we have:
BLFS/trunk/BOOK/xfce/apps/gtksourceview2.xml
and
BLFS/trunk/BOOK/gnome/platform/gtksourceview.xml.
i.e. one under xfce and the other under gnome. But the remaining one
will be used everywhere:
gnome/applications/gedit.xml: <xref linkend="gtksourceview"/>,
xsoft/other/balsa.xml: <xref linkend="gtksourceview"/>,
xfce/apps/mousepad.xml: <xref linkend="gtksourceview"/>
What do you think at the same time we remove gtksourceview2.xml, we then
move gtksourceview.xml out of gnome, perhaps in the same category as gtk+?
