You are the expert on fonts, so I defer to your judgement about what to say.
As for where they would go, would it be appropriate to have a separate
section like we do for Icons? Or would that be overkill?
I was planning to limit it to a single page, with external links.
We have several sections like 'About Firmware', 'About Devices', 'About
initramfs', 'About LVM', 'About RAID', etc. Would it be appropriate to have
an 'About Fonts' section?
I still would like to leave the fonts section in the Xorg chapter so when
the chapter is complete that a basic X window with xterm comes up. I don't
mind reducing the list or commenting out some or most of the fonts listed
with a note or section explaining what are needed.
See the reply I just sent to William's post : I wanted to keep them
in that chapter.
I'd like to see a mention of terminus fonts. I find them very useful for
the console when a display manager is not used. My personal preference is
ter-128n. Otherwise the default glyphs are very tiny.
I like 12x22, particularly on the tiny screen of my netbook.
I suppose we could have 'About Console Fonts'. I'm sure there might
be fonts in debian wh ic h are not in kbd (does console-tools provide
the fonts?), Terminus has at least two enthusiasts, perhaps a link to
psftools for editing a font, and a comment about the 256/512 glyph
limit.
The last thing I'd like to mention is that we have a package freeze coming
up in a couple of days. At that point we need to build/check literally
every package in the book. How much time do you need to do this? Would it
be batter to put it off until after 7.10?
I've got enough trouble getting to tlmgr-from-source. If I
move TTF/OTF fonts to a separate page, with a link like e.g. "For
using modern TTF/OTF fonts see 'Selecting TTF and OTF fonts'"
(replacing most of the current text in Xft Font Protocol) then I
won't be adding any new packages. In fact, either way I'm not
planning to add new packages to the book.
But I'm really lacking time.
OK, let's wait until September then.
