Any references to a different way of building ?

OK

yes, xrandr shows several, and they work with e.g. xrandr -s 6

Physically, yes (a regular British keyboard through a KVM, still
missing the '\' key, and an apple keyboard.) With different
keyboard definitions, the problem exists on both pc105 and powerpcps2
using the gb XkbLayout. Any other specific options you can recommend
me to try (e.g. for a working qwertz German keyboard) ?
> did you chek the keys with xev?
yes, they seem to work individually (apart from the missing '\',
but that is a kernel issue that I haven't yet managed to post about
on usb-devel).
> don't you think you need xkbcomp?
Certainly, that is one of the items I _didn't_ omit.
