Thank you very much for the clear explanation and for the recommendation. The book recommends building cups 1.1.23, however, this version does not compile. I went to cups 1.2.6 and 1.2.7 with the mentioned problems. So, definitly it is better to rebuild KDE on the 3.5.5 version and have a clean system. I am already doing so. Thanks again for the hint.
