Some usual steps in troubleshooting:

- copy the complete error message someplace you can access it.
sometimes I keep a log file on a flash drive if possible; i have been
known to use pen and paper to copy error messages.

- many hardware problems result from an improperly configured kernel.
run dmesg | less to see if anything useful was printed about the
hardware in question. system log files may also have something to
offer. NIC problems usually turn out to be that the right driver
wasn't built with the kernel.

- search the internet. i can't tell you how many times i've googled
quoted error messages. mailing list archives (such as the LFS
archives) are a good place to start.

- when you finally get around to asking questions, describe the
environment. you have a problem with your ethernet. give us some info
about the setup. What brand / model (/ revision?) is the ethernet
card? Which version of the kernel are you building? Which NIC drivers
are loaded? When do you notice the error? at bootup? later? What does
your network configuration involve? DHCP? static IP? wired? wireless?
Which version of supporting software is installed? DHCP-3.0.5 Client?
Dhcpcd-2.0.8? etc.
Then be prepared to clarify anything someone points out. ;)

You just need to provide a complete picture of the problem. And
personal stuff usually comes off as noise. Please don't apologize for
your skill level. Just describe the problem and ask for help.

I think it's very progressive that a school assignment involves
installing LFS. Last semester it took me two weeks to run through the
entire LFS book and most of the BLFS book during a busy time at
school. So don't panic, you've got plenty of time.
