I did exactly what was said in the documentation. I have a
libnetpbm.so... in /usr/lib, includes in /usr/include, all the binaries
in /usr/bin...

It's not a make install : the installation makes a package (in fact, a
subdir) in /tmp, and you can install them automatically or by hand. And I
did exactly that.
