You know, it's really interesting to see the blind spots people
have. Those same questions can be posed with the antecedent and
consequent portions reversed, and still apply with equal force.
"Why set up a wireless network connection by using a GUI
requiring compiling and installing a huge pile of gunk,
for example, when some very simple CLI commands can be issued,
and put into a script, where they will live forever?"
Since the "argument by question" applies with equal force to either
side of the argument, one can see that it actually states one thing,
and one thing only:
I like to use a GUI.
or
I like to use a CLI.
One thing about GUIs is, if they are broken, figuring out what
went wrong can be an ordeal, and requires submitting defect reports
upstream, whereas a broken 20 line script can be diagnosed and
fixed by the author. GUIs are also very large; some might say
"bloated".
In any case, GUIs hide what they are doing, and I like my machine
transparent to me.

Certainly.
I use the "local web" interface for setting up CUPS, for example.
I have GNOME presently on my host system, but I really only use it
to launch xterms, web browsers, a mail client, and start the keyboard
locker. I'd like very much to have something much simpler for a window
manager.
