I've been using a Radeon HD 4550 with the kernel for more than 2 years. My current GPU, the Radeon HD 4870, has worked fine with the kernel for 18 months. I did have some problems getting kernel mode setting working, but there's no reason he shouldn't be able to get some 3d acceleration working (glxgears, google earth) on a Radeon HD 4670.
