Thanks for your reply. For some reason, I had overlooked ticket #3081 - I thought 2.7.7 was "just another version upgrade" and had it way down my list of things to tackle. Looking at the ticket, the problem might apply on 32-bit as well as x86_64 (not that I really care about i?86).
