C++ is most suited for applications which by their nature have parts that are "object-like". Certainly this includes GUIs and simulations. But, I do think there is a growing problem of bloat and inefficiency when programmers reach for an all-too-easy-to-reach sledgehammer to drive in a nail. Java has probably made things much worse in this regard.
