VLC uses FFmpeg directly, not via GStreamer. GStreamer isn't even 
mentioned on VLC page, is it?

I didn't say that FFmpeg was deprecated, but the GStreamer FFmpeg plugin 
set. It was replaced by libav plugin set which does the same thing 
(libav is fork of FFmpeg). Honestly, I don't know why. It's up to 
GStreamer developers. GStreamer Libav is just plugin set for GStreamer 
1.0 and provides very same functionality as the GStreamer FFmpeg plugin 
did for 0.10 series.
