The configuration I use for Qt is:

     ./configure -confirm-license         \
                 -opensource              \
                 -release                 \
                 -prefix /opt/qt-$VERSION \
                 -sysconfdir /etc/xdg     \
                 -dbus-linked             \
                 -openssl-linked          \
                 -system-sqlite           \
                 -plugin-sql-sqlite       \
                 -no-phonon               \
                 -no-phonon-backend       \
                 -no-nis                  \
                 -no-openvg               \
                 -nomake demos            \
                 -nomake examples         \
                 -optimized-qmake &&

With that, I didn't have a problem with KDE (4.11).

I do have

$ ll -d /opt/q*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     8 Aug 23 14:06 qt -> qt-4.8.5
drwxr-xr-x 15 root root  4096 Jun 23 12:20 qt-4.8.4
drwxr-xr-x 15 root root  4096 Aug 23 19:43 qt-4.8.5
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root  4096 Aug 10 11:33 qt-5.1.0
drwxr-xr-x 13 root root  4096 Sep  9 01:10 qt-5.1.1
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root    13 Sep  9 01:10 qt5 -> /opt/qt-5.1.1

With /opt/qt/bin in PATH and /opt/qt/lib/pkgconfig in PKG_CONFIG_PATH
