I don't understand this question. The 'sandwich' is that both
harfbuzz and freetype need the other, so we build freetype,
    harfbuzz, feetype again.

Coincidentally, I've just been building Harfbuzz/Freetype today on a
long war round to getting my frame buffer and console sorted (which I
still haven't). I don't know if this is relevant but IMO the
instructions in the book could be misconstrued. It says to reinstall,
rather than rebuild, Freetype after Harfbuzz is built and installed.

I posed the question as I also consider the wording confusing and
inconsistent. Might the following be more consistent?

GLib-2.44.1, ICU-55.1, (FreeType-2.5.5, Harfbuzz-0.9.40,
FreeType-2.5.5) note: Install Freetype before and after
installing Harfbuzz.
Which-2.21, (FreeType-2.5.5, Harfbuzz-0.9.40, FreeType-2.5.5), and
libpng-1.6.17 note: Install Freetype before and after
installing Harfbuzz.

But with that said, I'm uncertain I understand your distinction between
rebuild and install.

I think most people would interpret reinstall as CMMI - compile, make, make install. What good would it do to just copy the same files to the system?
