kernel had other plans. Another crash informed me that the
partition is /dev/sdb3.
After correcting this in grub.cfg and /etc/fstab LFS 7.9
booted.
I also tried to boot my LFS 7.7. This system had swapped its
place with LFS 7.9, and it did not find its hard disk.
So I say the controller #5 is defective.
#Ken: I should have pointed out that I _was_ sure that my
grub.cfg pointed to the partition in question.
Sorry about that.
#akhiezer: initrd and udev are only used on my advanced systems.
My LFS 7.9 does not have this right now.
I should have worked out more before I posted.
And I try to give something back in the future.
I always recommend a separate /boot partition on the first hard drive.
From there you should be able to get grub to start and boot to any other
drive. Grub is not limited by the firmware.
