My scripts also use the "pio", Package Installation Observer. I find pio much easier to use than the PMs used by the big distros--it only has to serve ONE sysadmin. It's just one bash script. It's been reliable and all I need, nothing I don't. You'll find it, and a sample script using it, in the LFS Hints. See that.
