I too think that an external hard drive would be the way to go. With DVD's you'll have to feed them one at a time to do the backup. As far as a backup program, I use Norton ghost 2003. It is reasonably accessible with Jaws and does an image backup of your hard drive. If your hard drive goes belly-up you'll need an image backup to restore the boot sectors, operating system, and all program and data files. A simple data backup won't do this.
I know Ghost 2003 is a little dated so maybe someone else out there knows of a more current backup program that does an image backup and is Jaws friendly.
