Even though you have a well grounded surge protector, you might still have a 
ground problem.  I had to have an electrician "fix" the wiring to my office 
where our computer is located.  Whoever wired the room never properly 
connected the ground wire.  I did not hire him to do just this simple 
problem, we live in a big, old house and we have a lot of electrical 
problems.  If the well grounded surge protector is plugged into a wall 
receptacle that is not grounded, you get a "floating" ground situation that 
causes problems and noise for some electrical equipment.  In some 
situations, like a thunder storm, this could cause damage.
