You would think so, but Verizon seems to work in mysterious ways. Someone on another list provided the address of Target's mobile site (http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/mobile.jsp), which I am able to access just fine with IE 8. So now I can access the mobile Target site, but not the regular site. Very strange.

If it were your ISP wouldn't it block access with any
browser?

I tried accessing Target.com with both JAWS 10 and NVDA with
no luck. I
also tried accessing it using IE 8 with all add-ons
disabled, but again, no
luck. I was finally able to access it successfully using
Firefox 3.6, but I
normally use Firefox only for solving captchas with Webvisum
because I just
don't like it as my default browser. So I have no idea why
you are able to
access Target.com with XP and IE 8, but I can't. There must
be some quirk
in my system configuration that is causing this strange
problem. Could my
ISP, Verizon, be the culprit?

Gerald,

I have no idea unless there is some quirk, setting, etc.
in
your computer. Do you have another version of JAWS
installed
on your computer to try just for giggles?

So how come I can't access Target.com with XP Pro and IE
8?
I certainly don't think it has anything to do with JAWS.
This just doesn't make any sense.

Gerald,

For what it is worth, just tried going to target site and
it
opened with no problem. I'm using Window's XP Pro, latest
JAWS and IE 8

So this is not a screen reader issue. Then Target must
be
deliberately
blocking access to its web site to all consumers, blind
and
sighted alike,
who use certain browsers. This makes absolutely no
sense.
The rocket
scientists at Target who designed their web site are the
same lame brains
who are probably now wondering why their holiday sales
are
down.
Unbelievable.

Generally, The websites are programmed to see what type
of
browsers are
accessing them. Then the sites are developed to give the
best visual
display
to the browsers that most often access them. Thus, I am
not sure why the
IE
8 would not display as good as IE 9.

I was under the impression that Target had made a
serious
effort to
improve
the accessibility of its web site for blind consumers.
So imagine my surprise when I attempted to visit
Target.com today and got
the following error message:

Target Home Page

Problems viewing Target.com ?
It's because your browser isn't supported. Upgrade to
one
of the latest
versions listed below to get the most out of your
Target.com experience.

What the heck is going on here? What do they mean that
my
browser is not
supported? I'm running XP Pro with IE 8, so since when
is
this browser
not
supported? IE 8 is the latest version of Internet
Explorer that can run
under XP, which, the last time I checked will continue
to
be supported by
Microsoft through at least 2014. And don't even get me
started with
Firefox. Is there some reasonable explanation for this
message? Could my
screen reader, JAWS 9, be the culprit? Is there a work
around for this
problem? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Gerald
