I make interactive fiction myself (well, I did from 2012 to 2014 and considered getting back into it), and I always wrote them in JavaScript so that the players don't need to download any extra software. I'm actually considering writing my next one in Twine, which apparently compiles to more complex JavaScript; but I'll write it in Twine, not JS, because Twine is easy, or so it's been said.
