Hi Jude, Did you continue with the ensign? It is difficult , but its built like that for a reason, a lot of people give up on it as they keep dyeing. there's a spoiler below if you're interested, don't read any further if you don't want to know:
Major Spoiler below: So I haven't played in a while, but I read an article on the game by the developer when I did finally complete it, he actually deliberately built the game so you have to die a few times when you first start out and I believe each time you die you then start with a little more equipment and more of the map displayed also if you refuse the food to start with the game becomes a lot more difficult to complete as if I remember correctly you don't then get the compass either. If you enjoyed the dark room though it's definitely worth persevering with as it fills some of the backstory around a dark room, but yeah your right its definitely a brutal game , but it does get easier as you continue through the game.
