Hi Shaun! Thank you for completing the survey! Our plan is to develop some prototypes co-designing and testing with blind volunteers in our country. We are interviewing blind and low vision friends, but we want to get feedback from different people from different contexts through these surveys.
Maybe the survey didn't apply to you, I believe that. Let me explain my motivation. Our findings tell that very few digital games are enjoyable by mixed-ability groups. I played all my life with my brothers, friends and games are certainly a great way to be with others. But there's virtually no games I can play with my blind friends. Either games are totally audio-based and not so captivating to me and other sighted people or are visual and not accessible. Even board games are hardly appropriate. How can a game be equally enjoyable by players with different levels of vision? Our work revolves around that question. We found that blind children are excluded in school, because sighted colleagues are playing mainstream games like Fortnite and those are totally inaccessible. We found that blind people are excluded at home, because family is playing Fifa on Playstation or some inaccessible board game. And we argue that the solution is not just following accessibility guidelines. That would not be enough. Clever design and innovative techniques are needed. In this preliminary phase, we are just collecting experiences, concerns and desires regarding gaming and mixed-ability group play. And you helped us with that, so thanks again, Shaun! Yes some of us do play video games in consoles, and some do use emulators. But most blind people play games for blind people, usually offline unless you count the muds and text online games as actual games. I know we are all inclusive but there are quite a lot of us like me that most of the servey didn't apply to. I have no interest of playing video games online mainly because of my timezone and I don't own a console.
