Erion is a mud, an online multiplayer text game world where you type
commands like north south east west to move, open box, wield sword or
kill goblin, similarly to an interactive fiction game; though being a
mud you can shortern all the commands, EG n for north, kill go for kil
goblin etc.
You don't download the game itself, rather you connect to it with a mud
client program and create a character in that game, which means that as
you're playing a number of other people are playing to, though in what
ways you interact with them is up to you, EG you can chat to people,
play games with them, engage in player vs player combat if that's your
thing and so on.
the game doesn't have a single story like an rpg with a beginning,
middle, and end, what it does have is a world you can interact with,
monsters to fight, different areas to explore, craftting, fishing and
other activities to do, and a lot of missions to do with their own stories.
combat, as with all things in the mud, happens in real time, so when you
start a fight, your character and the enemy will trade blows until one
of you dies or runs away, however you need to perform actions like using
combat moves such as kick and trip, or casting spells, yourself by
typing them out at the time you want to use them, plus of course, there
are lots of buffs and spells you can cast on yourself before each fight
starts to give you an advantage, imho Erion's combat is actually a lot
more forgiving than inn many muds, especially with the ability to toggle
during the game whether you want to play in hardcore mode or not at will.
As to where to find the game, as I said, with muds you connect to the
game with a client program like Vipmud from Gma games, by connecting to
erionmud.com port 1234.
However, recently Erion have produced their own stand alone version of
the client (a customised version of muschlient), which will not only
just automatically connect to the game for you without need to do
anything, but also adds sounds and music for inspiration and atmosphere.
The only other mud I've seen do something like this is alteraeon, which
is also imho very worth playing.
