I strongly suspect a Perkins-style keyboard will curse you in many
interesting and unexpected ways when trying to play Alter Aeon (or any
mud). A capital sign is probably being read as an apostraphy for
example, and a lot of the commands you'll type would normally register
as contractions.
A very common example is casting spells, which you can abreviate to "c".
Several spells can also be cast with one or two letters, such as "c s"
for "cast sanctuary".
I wish you luck with it and will hope to see you online soon!

Wow, thanks for checking Player Lookup, John! Also, thanks for trying my
name at the login screen even though you couldn't proceed; it's a relief
to know I'm not doing something crazy on my end. I actually checked both
that and, as I said, the account info on the secure portal. And I'm
going to try logging in using computer braille which is uncontracted,
rather than litterary braille which can be contracted. It just seems
strange that the contraction for "the" messed things up on the login
screen, but not when I tried to create a new character. It recognized
the character name at that point. And appropriately said "can't do
that". And yes, if all else fails, I will create a new character with a
name that has no contractions in it whatsoever. Nexus just never reacted
to contractions at this stage before so ... shrug. Thanks for the alert
not to use capital letters when creating character names. I'll let you
guys know what happens either way.

Are you certain your notetaker isn't translating a perkins keystroke
into something else (like an exclamation mark if you're using the
"the" contraction)? Maybe try spelling it out fully, and remember to
avoid any capital letters.
Your character definitely exists:
Player 'coralthewolf', last login Sat Dec 9 22:40:00 2023
and entering the name gave me a password prompt.
You can also try creating another character if you like: there are
no limits on the number you can create, and most people actually
have more than one to try out different combinations of the classes.

I redownloaded Nexus and changed the port back to 3010. But still
got the same "invalid name, try another" response when I tried
Coralthewolf. And yes, that is the correct spelling. So it looks
like my stay on Alter was a brief, but enjoyable, one. Thanks for
all your help Jude and John. I know I could sideload Tintin+ but I
just don't feel comfortable fiddling with files that I don't
understand; I'm not a coder.

I will change the port, but I can't use MushZ because I'm
playing on an Android notetaker. I prefer its perkins keyboard
to any qwerty one.

The mixed-up characters you're talking about are ascii art.
Change your client to point to port 3010 and they will go away.
If possible, using mush-z is your best option for playing
Alter Aeon.

Thanks, Jude, I'll try that. Nexus hasn't been updated since
September of 2023 and all it said under what's new is

re-install and see what happens. If it works, fine. If not,
Alter was fun while it lasted for me. The rest of the
machine and all other apps work beautifully. On Jun 18, 2024

I haven't played Alter in about 6 months. When I
tried to log on with my character name, I got the
message "invalid name, trx another". So I tried
logging into their secure login portal on their
site. This worked splendidly and my account info
looked just fine. So I went back to my client and
tried to re-create Coralthewolf. I got the message
"name is already in use" which of course, it is. So
the game itself clearly recognizes the character.
But after closing the app completely for several
hours I got the same "invalid name" message, even
though I know I'm typing it correctly. The only
thing I can see that might be strange is that at the
very bottom of the screen, within the client, are
quite a few lines of code: numbers, letters, quotes,
question minks, and the plus sign, in several
configurations. I have no idea what, if anything, it
means. The only understandable lines say Alter Aeon
v2.25 or something like that. Has this happened to
anyone else? Any ideas what's going on? Should I try
to create a new character and if that one logs in
successfully, try to log it out and log Coral io?
Thanks for any responses. Heather
