If we did the time travel thing we would have to certainly think about 
how it would work.
There are several theories about time travel, and weather or not   
certain things are possible. For example, if you went back in time and 
killed your mother before you were born. You have not been born to be 
able to do it, and end up with unanserable conundroms.
The reverse is true. How can someone travel forward and change future 
events that haven't happened yet?
Any, your points about Darth Vader are valid. If someone changes time 
Vader may have never turned back to the light, been killed earlier or 
later than the standard timeline, and all sorts of interesting things 
can be planned.
