Hi all,
There was a game in the early nineties, scorched earth. It was where between 2
and 5 tanks, I may have the upper limit wrong though, played against each other.
You start off by buying equipment for the round, I.e. different kinds of
missiles, rollers, diggers, etc, and fuel for the tank, parachutes, shields,
etc.
Then the map was generated, and the tanks placed randomly on the map. The map
was a drawing of mountains and valleys, and the tanks was placed on for example
the slope of a mountain, or in the valley below.
Each player then get a turn to aim at another and try to shoot him to kingdom
come.
The tanks could use there fuel to move a little distance, each move using a
unit of fuel. A fuel tank held about 10 units.
The parachute was there to help you survive if your enemy shot a digger below
you and causes you to fall. Without it, you'll sustain heavy damage, or even
blow up.
Shields, ah well I suppose they speak for themselves.
I've been thinking a long time that this game could be converted to audio,
using a up and down scale of sound to draw the environment, with tone queues
where the different tanks are. It was huge fun, me and my friends played until
early hours, suffering at work the next day.
They drew my finger along the contours of the map indicating where is which
player, and then you aim and shoot, giving degrees and power.
If you got it totally wrong, you could even end up by blowing yourself to
smithereens.
Ah well, the good old days.
