Dan,
Depends on what kind of a saw you have available.
and whether it's easier to move the saw, the wood or the entire world.
but your way sounds best.
make sure you get a saw with a shoe that has holes in it for 
screws to hold the board to it.
the board should, perhaps obviously, be long
enough to go entirely under the shoe
and ride with it.
mount the saw to the uncut board, then measure from the actual
blade out along the boarrd to where the center
will fall.make sure the nail hole in the board is a little large so it can
swing without pulling the nail out of the stock.
wax the bottom of the boarrd maybe so it'll move easily.
