Regarding storm water going down the sewer, I believe I heard by keeping the storm water and sewer separated it helps reduce the load on the treatment process. Storm run off can be handled differently than the need to process the sewer. So Dan, I am surprised that your storm run off goes in to the sewer.
Also if people did not know there are expandable plugs that can be bought for plugging a floor drain. If you look under the floor drain grating usually there is a round hole that the water goes down. I will try to describe one of these plugs. There is a thick rubber disk sandwiched between two metal plates. The bottom plate is slightly smaller in diameter than the rubber disk. The top metal plate has a larger diameter than the rubber disk. The top plate is large to stop the plug from falling in the hole. Finally at the very top there is a large wing nut. When you turn the wing nut it pulls the bottom plate up and it expands the rubber disk up against the inside wall of the drain then plugging it. The rubber disk I mentioned above really is a thick O-ring with flat sides if that makes any since to you. I have know people to hang these type of plugs on a nail above the floor drain so it can be found quickly when it is needed. Now one last comment regarding these floor drain plugs I have been describing. The floor drains in my basement and garage are a between size for the plugs that I have described. I really should look farther in to this to see if there are more sizes and maybe one will fit my drains.
