They are making some attractive conduit for this these days. many people use it so the wires are not hanging out all over the place when they run them to computers and entertainment centers. I agree it is not the best esthetically for a full rewiring, but then neither is knocking out all the walls or having an electrical fire. My favorite suggestion is the wainscoting one. Although it wouldn't be in my budget either.
Can you just disconnect all the old wires from the electric source and leave them?
