I don't see why exactly washing the heads is a problem. Open the door and
press the play button. The heads will extend and the spindal motors will
turn. When the machine realizes there is no cassette the spindals and a
little
wheel at the front may stop but the heads and wheel extend outwards. If still
running you have to watch out or anything like string or whatever could wrap
around the wheel, just stay away from it and stick to the heads. Do not be
afraid to stick your fingers in there, it's always been safe to me in the past,
unless your afraid of the power of the magnetic heads. :) There are no
sharp edges to cut yourself on and the wheel turning cannot grab your finger,
it
is rubber and and a spinning metal rod next to it is also harmless.

If you only want to demagnitize the machine, Radio Shack sells a
demagnitizing cassette. Just pop it in and run, clears the problem.
