I had missed your earlier post on my other computer. If it was on power saver
and has been used on power saver mode for long periods of time, like three
years to keep it quieter on a slower fan speed. I have seen where the fan will
ground out and bypass power to complete the power requirements needed to run
the compressor. It sounds funny, but I have seen it happen. It usually
involves the capacitor circuits.
It just might have been frozen up that hard that it allowed the air to be
cooled due to defrosting a solid block of ice.
Feathering of the contacts happens any time, but especially when low
voltage due to high demand. The contacts on the contactor heat up, become lose
and move a little. Around the outside edge of the contact there will form arc
weld spots and splattering to the plate that the contact is mounted to, which
is referred to as feathering. The contacts will become pitted and burn. Once
it gets to bad or lasts too long, the contactor will burn or arc fast, in the
on position and the unit can not stop if the main power switch is turned on.
There are other reasons for them not to shut off also.
