Actually in reference to gas piping, the Code expressly prohibits it being used as a grounding electrode.. Technically it is bonded through the sheet metal and the equipment ground of the power circuit feeding it, but it is never to be used as a grounding electrode. . Reasoning is pretty obvious. Water pipes are not considered safe electrical grounds, both because rust can make joints higher resistance and because some systems have issolators specifically to prevent electric current flow to the mains. This is absolutely true of gas pipes also. Not that many people, sometimes including me, don't use the cold water pipe to ground a radio receiver or the like, but not for a heavy duty beast like a generator.
