I replaced all my light switches and fixtures when i rewired the lighting circuits in my house. now all my lights are on 2 different breakers, so if something plugged in trips the breaker, there will still be light. Otherwise I wouldn't have replaced the switches. Michael

If I was making a wild guess you probably have plastic boxes which have no metal to ground to in Dales case there were likely metal boxes that were grounded to the wiring and the metal strap of the switch was grounded by the mounting screws and touching the metal box. But you are correct they do sell switches with grounding screws on the metal strap. Replacing a single pole one way switch is very forgiving. It doesn't matter a damn which wire goes on witch pole black or white. The unprotected ground of course goes on the ground terminal if there is one, most switches don't have a ground terminal I have never seen one, where a ground is present the box is grounded and you won't need to even be aware of that. If this is a two way switch again it doesn't matter which of the black or white wires are on which terminal on the side of the switch with two terminals, the red wire goes on the third terminal on the other side of the switch. Again there isn't usually a ground terminal on the switch. There isn't really anything to ground, the switch chassis is directly connected to the box. A plug is different because you are wanting to return ground leakage through a prong on the plug to ground so any circuit fault will take that route rather than through a person. If an overhead lamp shorts to ground it won't do it through the switch. On a US receptacle. You will find on both sides are four screws, in pairs, and four holes on back to match the screws. If you use the holes, bare 1/4 of wire and push it into hole. If using screws on side bare 1/2, and make a u shape, to grab around the screws. The ground screw will be on bottom edge. You might have one at each end or just the one. hook up the ground and if using holes. Pick the ones across from each other. The other pair are to add another plug or switch or to string off of for another box. Pull the one that is bad off and you should see that same as above directions.
