One more point, you can direct the heat up to an inch or so from the joint 
on the female side of the joint and when it's hot enough the solder will 
seek out  where the heat is directed.  Another words the heat will draw the 
solder into the joint where ever it's the hottest, so make sure you get the 
heat all the way around the pipe or tubing.  I haven't tried this since I've 
been blind, but you can take a wet rag and tie it around the pipe.  Before 
lighting the torch, take the tip of the torch and place it on the female 
side of the joint with your hand resting on the pipe.  Now slide the wet rag 
where your hand is going to be resting on the pipe.  Now you'll have a 
reference point where  you can rest your hand while doing the soldering.
