Hi Tim, You shouldn't have any rivets to remove to remove the outer housing of a microwave, otherwise it wouldn't be financially feasible to do all that work to drill out the rivets, then re-attach new ones once the unit was fixed.
On top of that, you may damage the unit further if the drill you're using to drill out the rivets goes in too far, or something like that. I think that the rivets you saw might have been holding something else within the unit that needed to be there. Without looking at it, I couldn't tell you what that is, so I won't speculate, but I can tell you, with some reasonable assurances, that rivets would not be holding the housing onto the unit.
