I always use a sanding block for the last sanding step and make sure that I am going with the grain. I always use a sanding block so the sand paper is flat. If you just use your hand you can get some very slight concave marks that will show in the final finish. Learned that the hard way. I know a woodworker who makes very expensive cherry pieces. Most start over $5,000. Anyway he told me one tip that he uses and I would or could not try. For his final sanding he first evenly sprays a very light coat of water to raise the grain and sands that off. The other thing he only ever uses 100 grit paper. He sprays his stain and final finishes. He told me that the lacker fills and levels the table tops. He sprays many coats of lacker and hand rubs the finish. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Vos" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 10:33 PM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Random orbit sander
Thanks. It is labeled "random" orbit. I'll have to try some finer grit paper. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Dale Leavens Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 9:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Random orbit sander Hi Tom, Random orbit sanders aren't supposed to leave that swirl pattern however there is a difference between orbital sanders and so called random orbital sanders. You may have an orbital sander not a random orbital sander. Orbital sanders certainly do leave a swirl pattern which is fine when painting but most translucent finishes will show the swirl pattern through, in fact often you won't see the swirls until you apply a finish to the wood. You can mitigate this by working down through ever finer grits to around 5 or 600 but for best success you need to step finer in quite small increments so that each grade removes some of the swirls of the grade above. You might then have to polish a little by hand working the direction of the wood or finish with a fine scraper to remove the last of the marks. I have had a few orbital sanders, fine for preparing for paint or for polishing plaster but not much else. A good random orbit sander will cost in the range of a hundred or more bucks. Hope some of this is helpful. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Vos" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 9:22 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Random orbit sander > Hi folks, > I have a random orbit sander, wich I got because someone told me you don't > have to worry about the grain direction, so you can sand where grain meets > grain at 90 degrees -- like the rails on the desk front I'm building. > The sander makes the surface feel polish smooth to me, but my wife has > this > pesky ability to see, and she says the sander leaves tiny swirls in the > wood.
