Most of the times I can remember how the wood was joined. Where I know I
will get in trouble I usually mark the under side. The one place where I get
in trouble and get sighted assistance is on my plant stands. The tops of
these stands are constructed of four pieces of 1 1/2"stock. Two pieces are 6
3/8 long and the other two are 9 3/8". There is finally a decora5tive 6"
tile placed in the middle. Anyway If I totally sand the top I do get some
cross grain sanding marks on two of the sides. I can carefully remove them
if I can feel the end grain on the 9" pieces but to make sure I scratch a
line on the underside where it will be concealed by the aprons.

Not to pull this topic away from the initial discussion, but when wood
is rough or has been wet, you can feel the grain, but as you sand it
down, it becomes more difficult. How do you determine which direction
the grain is going or do you simply have to remember all this while
your working the piece. I know my sense of touch is not quite as sharp
as it used to be and that probably is do to playing bass. Just curious
how folks keep the grain direction straight.

tnx
