Well, since I started this..
We wound up with an Electrolux that sort of looks like an electric broom but is cordless. The vacuum portion and the rotating brushes are presumably powered by different batteries. You can remove the vacuum piece from the unit, and it becomes very much like a dustbuster at that point. On a related note, my wife and I think that robots used routinely probably do as good a job as a blind person at vacuuming, so she bought the latest and greatest I Robot package. The package consists of three units, one standard room-cleaner, one floor-scrubber, and one robotic shop vac. We already have two older room-cleaners, one works well, the other will likely be given away to a good home. I have a free-standing large sink in the basement where the shop vac will be deployed, and I had a real concern that the robot would ultimately knock it free of the drain pipe, so I built a barrier out of 3.4 plywood. Since the flor is concrete, I was forced to buy one of those Remington Power Hammers in order to nail down my barrier. These are not nearly as easy to use as the old stud guns I used to have access to. The thing takes a .22 short, and because that's a rim-fire load, you really have to be dead-on when you strike the plate to hit the primer. Doing this in a close-quarters area was challenging and not particularly pleasant.
