Yep,

Your cable modem should have an RJ45 plug that goes into your present router.
You just plug that into the wireless router instead of your present router.
There will usually be 4 other RJ45 jacks on the wireless router so you can, if
you want, plug the desktop into the wireless router directly just as you have
it now plugged into your present router. You can also plug your notebook into
it if you like but that rather defeats the purpose.

I have a network printer and a network embosser plugged into my wireless router
up stairs so I can print to them from either of our notebooks anywhere in the
house without having to connect to them directly.

Certainly you can put a wireless card in your desktop but why bother?

Hope this is helpful.

Hello Dale, My router isn't a wireless one. I've had it at least 5 years.
I can hook up 4 computers to it. When I do decide to buy a new laptop, I'll
have to buy a wireless card for the desktop, a new wireless router, and I
think my service provider may have to send me a wireless modem. Unless my
present cable modem can hook up to the wireless router.
