While you are shopping get a three quarters ball valve and two three quarters
brass nipples. Before you install the new heater remove the drain valve by
screwing it out with a pipe wrench and installing the new ball valve with a
nipple on each end. Now you will be set u p for minor draining so sediment
does not build up. When you do a drain turn the valve on about 15 seconds
then off and then, off and on qickly about half a dozen times to get the water
sswirling then open for about thirty seconds or until the water is running
clear. Doing this about once a month will do wonders for prolonging the life
and performance of a heater. Note if you are going to use a garden hose to
drain with you will need to get a three quarter pipe to garden hose adapter..
Of course use pipe dope or teflon thread tape to make sure the joints don't
leak. Also if you forget and let this go too long between flushing a ball
valve will open up totally so you can shove a rod into the tank and break loos
blockages so the water will run out.
May you have many years of trouble free hot water.
