You should check for a stuck button.  Just get someone with sight to look at 
the business end through a digital camera or video camera.  The electronic 
screen not the optical viewer.  The infrared from the remote is picked up by 
the camera and appears as a visible object in the viewer.  Test it by 
pressing a button.  If there is a stuck key the light will be on all the 
time or perhaps intermittently.  NiCad cells put out 1/4 volt less than 
primary cells.  If there are 4 cells the result will be a volt low.  The 
remote might not work correctly or may not have as much range is with 
regular batteries.
