Aloha Phil, My Whirlpool has one knob, very easy for me to operate. Off is when the knob is pointing almost toward the floor, and turning it clockwise, turns up the dryness. I don't think it could be easier. It has some sort of sensor that cycles it on and off. When the collection container is full, it shuts itself off. There's a float inside the container. There is a light that comes on when the container needs to be emptied, but if you don't see it, nothing will happen except that the unit won't run until you empty the container.
