I wonder if you can still get lead fixtures. More often now there is a neoprene sleeve which fits tightly around the pipe and is fitted firmly to the roof decking then the shingles run into that. Plastic should work very well too, it will be designed for the purpose so usually it depends on the installer doing it right.
