I wonder if you can still get lead fixtures. More often now there is a neoprene 
sleeve which fits tightly around the pipe and is fitted firmly to the roof 
decking then the shingles run into that. Plastic should work very well too, it 
will be designed for the purpose so usually it depends on the installer doing 
it right.

    I remember from a while back in an email on this list that I should make 
sure the roofer replaces all the roof jacks with lead around plumbing pipes, 
not 
  the rubber ones. I asked my potential roofer about this and he told me he 
does not use the lead ones cause squarles eat the lead. He says he uses a new 
plastic roof jack arround the plumbing.

  Is this right?
