Lexan is the bullet proof version of Plexiglas.  You are supposed to be able to 
use half the thickness of lexan as you would in Plexiglas.  It also isn't 
supposed to yellow as Plexiglas will do over time.

I think you're right about the quarter inch not being thick enough. 
I'm not particularly heavy, but my chair is quite substantial. When I 
priced the plexiglass I asked for a quote for half inch with rounded 
corners. He quoted me nearly $700. I laughed and told him I had to 
check with my office manager, lol, that's me. Didn't want the guy to feel bad.
